Feedback Strategies

Giving feedback can be tough it’s hard to put it in a nice way sometimes and to be honest it’s not something I’m fond of doing, I just feel like a lot of people can take you up the wrong way and feel like you’re just not being nice even when your just trying to help.

The two articles I’ve read have helped me understand a bit more about giving and receiving feedback, because for me sometimes it is hard to take feedback the right way because ultimately no one wants to be told there wrong.

The main thing to understand about receiving feedback is that the person giving it is trying to help you improve and give their opinion that’s all.

How to give Feedback Without Sounding Like a Jerk

The first article I read was How to give Feedback Without Sounding Like a Jerk, I found this read rater interesting as the writer talks about their own experience and a solution a lot of people use is called the feedback sandwich, basically what that means is start with compliments, secondly give the negative feedback and then after that give some more compliments again. The writer explains why this way of giving feedback isn’t actually that great even though it does sound like a good way of doing it.

The best way to give feedback according to the writer is the following four steps:

1.     Explain why you’re giving the feedback.
2.     Take yourself off a pedestal.
3.     Ask if the person wants feedback.
4.     Have a transparent dialogue, not a manipulative monologue.

The writer explains these four steps in detail and personally I found it very interesting and useful.

Why Do So Many Managers Avoid Giving Phrase

The second article I read was Why Do So Many Managers Avoid Giving Phrase, I found this article interesting at first it talks about how a lot of people really stress when giving feedback and try to avoid it as much as possible.

In this article the writer shows some and talks about some statistics about managers. The first chart shows how managers are seen as more effective when they give praise. This I found rather interesting, the second statistic shows how mangers see themselves as more effective when they give criticism. There is even shown on the chart that some managers decide not to give some feedback at all.

All of the information in this article is really interesting and helpful to know and I would suggest giving it a read for yourself.
