Unity Tutorial 04

Image
This weeks Unity tutorials were really interesting, I was happy with what I learned from them. Last week I was left wondering how I would be able to spawn animals without pressing the S key and I was also wondering how I would make them disappear when they got shoot with the pizza, this week thought me how to do all of that and I feel like this information could really help me when developing my game as well as that there was other things I learned which were really helpful but those were my two main things this week.    The challenge with the dog and the balls I found difficult and it took me a while to figure out but with the clues and the information I have already learned I eventually managed to fix up all the coding and make the game work the way it should.  I’m excited to see what the next Unity tutorials will be and what I can learn from them. Each week is getting closer to when I will be starting to create my own game so I’m also excited to start that but I still need to learn

Game Vision Statement

Image
Image - Scary SpongeBob GIF Introduction The game I’m creating is called house666. Just imagine you’re stuck in a haunted house in the woods and you need to escape that’s exactly what this game is and also you haven’t got to long, so you’ll have to be quick or you get caught.  Game Genre This game is a horror / scary game depends what you like to call it. The game is based in an old house in the woods, the house is so called “house666” no one exactly knows where the name of the house came from. There have being stories of the house being haunted and scary stories about its past.  Description There was a journalist in the year 1967 who wanted to have a look at the house for himself and get a write up about it. He didn’t believe that the house was haunted, so he wanted to go himself and take a look at it, of course him not believing it was haunted was going to change. When he first came on the grounds of the house he seen the name by the main gate “house666” which did worry him a bit but

Unity Tutorial 03

Image
This week on Unity I followed the tutorials to make a game where there are 3 animals running towards the player from random positions and you can shoot pizza at them. I really enjoyed this week tutorials and it helped me understand Unity even more. I was wondering before this tutorial how to make stuff spawn and disappear at a certain point so they are not just running of and not disappearing. This tutorial thought me how to get rid of the animals when they reach a certain point and also how to get rid of the pizza when it reaches a certain point. I found these tutorials really interesting and I feel as if the tutorials have helped me understand Unity a lot better. One thing I would like to know is how to spawn the animals automatically, for example maybe every 5 seconds because at the moment they only spawn when I press the S key. I have some ideas in my head as to how some of the stuff I learned could be applied to my own game.  Image - My own screenshot of my Unity Anyway, I found t

Games MDA

Image
Image - MDA Framework MDA: A Formal Approach to Game Design and Game Research This article teaches you about the MDA framework, MDA stands for Mechanics, Dynamics and Aesthetics.  Aesthetics   The aesthetics of a game are as follows: Sensation Fantasy Narrative Challenge Fellowship Discovery Expression Submission Basically saying a game is fun isn’t enough to describe a game there are lots of different games that are fun in different ways which is when this list can be used to describe different ways in which the game is fun.  Dynamic Models Dynamics work to create aesthetic experiences. In this article it shows how challenges effect a game and how it makes you play the game and how some games can feel like there is no comeback and may turn the player the player in the losing position off continuing, for example, Monopoly when the winner in Monopoly goes so far ahead it causes the loser to go so far behind that the loser then knows more than likely there is no way to come back and turn

Tech Task: Embed Twitter Widget in Sidebar

Image
I actually did this task a few weeks ago but never wrote up a blog about. When I first did it I made the mistake of adding one tweet not the whole timeline so for a few days after each tweet I did I was adding it sepretaly and then I realised there is a a way of adding your whole timeline... So ye I felt stupid.  Don't make the mistake I made!  Image - Feeling Dumb GIF Want to learn how to do this? - Twitter Widget

Feedback Strategies

Image
Giving feedback can be tough it’s hard to put it in a nice way sometimes and to be honest it’s not something I’m fond of doing, I just feel like a lot of people can take you up the wrong way and feel like you’re just not being nice even when your just trying to help.  The two articles I’ve read have helped me understand a bit more about giving and receiving feedback, because for me sometimes it is hard to take feedback the right way because ultimately no one wants to be told there wrong.    The main thing to understand about receiving feedback is that the person giving it is trying to help you improve and give their opinion that’s all.  Image - Simpsons Feedback GIF How to give Feedback Without Sounding Like a Jerk The first article I read was How to give Feedback Without Sounding Like a Jerk, I found this read rater interesting as the writer talks about their own experience and a solution a lot of people use is called the feedback sandwich, basically what that means is start with comp

Game Idea Research

Image
Choosing my game So, the game idea I’m going to be working on for the rest of the semester is my scary game and I’m going to name it “house666”. The reason I’ve chosen the scary game is because I think it’s different and it will be really fun to make and hopefully not too difficult. The name I’ve chosen simply came to me because the game is going to be based in a house and the devil’s numbers are 666, so as soon as you see 666 you know what you’re in for.  Image - Creepy House Brief description of the game I have discussed this in my first game brainstorm but I have changed my mind a little so, firstly the game will be based in a house and your overall objective is to get out of the house of course it won’t be that simple so you’ve to complete some objectives and get out. Last time I wrote about this is I talked about being chased around the house by a character and if your caught you lose well that has changed a little as I realized that be may be fairly difficult so what I’m going to

Unity Tutorial 02

Image
Unity Tutorial 1.4 I found unity tutorial 1.4 to be easy enough its not too hard to follow the instructions when you realize how to use the software. I was wondering before this tutorial how the player would control the car and control when it moves forward, backwards, left and right so to figure that out was interesting and it was really fun.  Challenge 1 (The plane) Now this challenge on the other hand was difficult as I was saying it’s not too difficult to follow instructions but when your left to do it alone that is when it gets rather difficult. When I started to do the challenge I actually went blank for a minute or two and didn’t even know where to start, and then. I just started to do it and I did struggle I had to look back at my car coding from time to time and I had to look at one or two of the car tutorials but I got there in the end. When I completed the whole challenge I was actually proud of myself it took me a while but it’s my first piece of game development I’ve done

Game Elements

Image
Image - Virtual Ping Pong What are the qualities of Games? By Ian Schreiber   In this article the writer talks about all the qualities of a game. There are some recurring themes in games: “rules, conflict, goals, decision-making and an uncertain outcome”.    Ian also explains what the atomic elements in games are, the list as follows are some parts of games: Players Objectives Rules Resources and Resource Management Game State Information Sequencing Player Interaction Theme (Narrative, Backstory, Setting) Game as Systems Ian also leaves a link for each one of these which they are explained a lot more in detail. Critical analysis may not exactly be what you thinking as it is not as simple as just rating the game or just saying it’s fun there’s a lot more to it and it’s a lot more complicated than that.  Find out more! Game design research    This article goes into detail on how all game designers have different perspectives on what exactly game design is. It shows people view game desig

Tech Task:Twitter Lists

Image
Image - Twitter GIF For this task I followed the instructions to create a twitter list. I have never created a twitter list before so I just created a list with some of my favourite YouTubers. The reason I created this list is because YouTube is something I am really interested in and these content creators are really good at what they do. I hope this will help anyone that is interested in creating a twitter list and if you don't what a twitter list is I recommend checking it out. :) Link to my list: My Favourite YouTubers Link to task: Twitter Lists

My Feedback Thoughts

Image
Image - Feedback How to get past negative bias The first article I read was " How to get past negative bias ", I found the article extremely interesting and I think it's a great read to try and work on being more happy in life. I found it interesting what Hanson was saying about if 5 good things happen, 4 neutral and 1 negative which one do you go to bed thinking about and its true you think about the negative. What Hansons is doing is trying to get us to overcome that and make our happy thoughts more powerful than the negatives ones because just naturally us humans we think about the negative thoughts more than the happy ones, this isn't something that we should just let happen and I think Hansons talk was really powerful and uplifting and I really am going to try and take what he said away with me. Hanson said to remember the word "HEAL", each letter has a different meaning with different instructions. H - Have a positive experience.  E - Enrich it.  A - A

Game Brainstorm

Image
Hi, to get started the first thing I did was a brainstorm just to get my mind flowing: Quick Brainstorm - (my own image) Basically what I did was write genres to different games, then from there I wrote the first games that came to mind in each genre. Even though I would never be able to create a game even close to the standards of these with the time we have it just gives me an idea what I want to work on. After writing all of these games I then underlined the ones I'm most interesting in.  Game 1: Even before I made this list the first game that came to my mind when I thought of creating a game was the game slender man. For anyone that doesn’t know what slender man is, it is a scary game where you basically spawn in the woods and the objective of the game is to collect all the notes on the trees before slender man gets you. What made this game so fun and scary was it was actually difficult and slender man was scary and the even scarier part about slender man was that there’s stor

Unity Tutorial 01

Image
I just completed my first set of Unity tutorials and it was something I was looking forward to doing and excited for.    When I opened Unity initially it looked very confusing and hard to use, as you start to follow the tutorials you start to understand how it works and that it’s not as confusing as it looks.  Image - Cartoon Car   To be honest I didn’t find any of the tutorials to complicated yet, some things just take a minute or two to figure out but apart from that it was fine. The only thing I did have a problem with was when creating the project at the start I tried to locate it onto my external hard drive instead of my desktop, just because I store most things onto that to save space but for some reason it kept giving me an error and the program wouldn’t open so when I searched it up online it said external hard drives can cause that problem that I’ll just have to save it to my desktop which was relief that it wasn’t something more complicated.    My experience using Unity for t

Game Design

Image
Image - Stack of books You ever wondered what a game is exactly? The article "what is a game anyway" will tell you exactly what a game is and how to create one.  This article shows that everyone has a different perception on what a game is for example when the word game comes to mind some people may think of a board game, some may think of a game of cards, some may think of a video game all of these are games but their just all different types of games.  If you ever thought you would never be able  create a game this article will surely change your mind in fact it will teach you how to create a game, a simple one but still a game.  Find out more - What is a game anyway? Coming up with an idea to create a game may be simple which w as shown in the paragraph above but getting a good idea is a different story. In the article "the organic nature of game ideation" 23 game designers are interviewed. They show the different ways some of them find ideas and to see how some

Time Strategies

Image
I think managing time is an extemely important thing to do for everyone. The two articles I read are the psychology of checklists by Lauren Marchese and time management tips just for creatives  by Amanda Oliver.  I found both articles extremely interesting and very helpful. I think checklists are really important and like the article said they are very satisfying for us and make us very happy when we mark something off on a checklist. For me what I use is notes on my iPhone and my Mac, what I do is just list everything I need to do and when I'm done something I just delete it off and it is very satisfying for me to see the list gradually getting smaller. The article on time management tips just for creatives was also very interesting, some tips I found really useful and I'm going to try to work them for example, to work on the worst things first it was interesting what it said about that and I'm going to remember that from now on because it is true when your dreading doing

Technology tools

Image
I'm familiar with all of the tools that we will be using but some of them I haven't used to much in the past so I'm interested and excited to learn more about them and learn how to use them more.  Image - image of technology One thing I need to start using for not only this module but every module is bookmarking its's such an easy tool to use and it's so handy, for some reason its just something I never used even though I've always known that it's there but it's just something I never started using.  As I also mentioned in a previous blog I want to really improve on my writing skills so doing these blogs all the time will really help me achieve that.

Back to Assignments

Image
Image - Console controller College has started back and so have the assignments and it's a good feeling to be back working on them even though they can be stressful.  When I picked this course there was many different things I was excited for but game development was one of the things on top of that last. I'm a gamer myself so to start creating games and using the Unity software really excites me.  Blog writing is one thing I really want to improve on this semester even though I don't think I'm to bad I feel like I have lot of room for improvement and being a good writer is a great skill to have.  For the extra credit assignments I want to try and complete as many as I can every week to be sure I get the max amount of points I can so I can achieve a good grade. One of the extra credit assignments I will be interested to do more is the growth mindset ones, not only are you getting extra credits but you're actually learning a lot and getting a better mindset in the p

Growth Mindset has interested me

Image
Image - Human Brain I have never heard of growth mindset or Carol Dweck but I was really interested in what she was saying and I strongly agree with her beliefs.  I believe anyone can do anything that they put their mind too, if you put enough effort into something you will get results and sometimes to get good results it can take a lot of time and a lot effort but in the end you will get there. When I was growing up I always thought when people got better grades than me that they where just better than me, this would lead to me just eventually not putting any effort in and dropping to lower level classes and just giving up.  Now that I have gotten older I have realised you get what you put into stuff but a lot of kids don't know this because of how society works they just think if they don't get good grades then their just not good enough and eventually they start to just give up. If society praised kids for the effort they put into things instead of the grades they get, I be
