Backstory and Tragic Event (Charcter Development) Analysis

Image
Image - GIF - Research This week’s reading task took me a long time to complete, I spent a long-time finding papers and then a long time doing my annotated bibliographies, but with that being said I’m happy with what I have achieved this week. My topic is backstories and tragic events within character development and this week I have found a lot of interesting stuff that is going to help me put my literature review together. I was initially thinking my research would all be about storytelling and so on, but I have gotten information about how certain events can affect player emotions, how AI can be used for characters in game and lots more. When I was first looking for writings to study, I was only using the colleges library, but this week I started to use google scholar which I found to be extremely useful. After a while I started to get used to how to search to get more accurate results and I started to find more keywords to help me along my way. After this week I feel like I hav...

Feedback Strategies

Image
Giving feedback can be tough it’s hard to put it in a nice way sometimes and to be honest it’s not something I’m fond of doing, I just feel like a lot of people can take you up the wrong way and feel like you’re just not being nice even when your just trying to help.  The two articles I’ve read have helped me understand a bit more about giving and receiving feedback, because for me sometimes it is hard to take feedback the right way because ultimately no one wants to be told there wrong.    The main thing to understand about receiving feedback is that the person giving it is trying to help you improve and give their opinion that’s all.  Image - Simpsons Feedback GIF How to give Feedback Without Sounding Like a Jerk The first article I read was How to give Feedback Without Sounding Like a Jerk, I found this read rater interesting as the writer talks about their own experience and a solution a lot of people use is called the feedback sandwich, basically what that means...

Game Idea Research

Image
Choosing my game So, the game idea I’m going to be working on for the rest of the semester is my scary game and I’m going to name it “house666”. The reason I’ve chosen the scary game is because I think it’s different and it will be really fun to make and hopefully not too difficult. The name I’ve chosen simply came to me because the game is going to be based in a house and the devil’s numbers are 666, so as soon as you see 666 you know what you’re in for.  Image - Creepy House Brief description of the game I have discussed this in my first game brainstorm but I have changed my mind a little so, firstly the game will be based in a house and your overall objective is to get out of the house of course it won’t be that simple so you’ve to complete some objectives and get out. Last time I wrote about this is I talked about being chased around the house by a character and if your caught you lose well that has changed a little as I realized that be may be fairly difficult so what I’m goin...

Unity Tutorial 02

Image
Unity Tutorial 1.4 I found unity tutorial 1.4 to be easy enough its not too hard to follow the instructions when you realize how to use the software. I was wondering before this tutorial how the player would control the car and control when it moves forward, backwards, left and right so to figure that out was interesting and it was really fun.  Challenge 1 (The plane) Now this challenge on the other hand was difficult as I was saying it’s not too difficult to follow instructions but when your left to do it alone that is when it gets rather difficult. When I started to do the challenge I actually went blank for a minute or two and didn’t even know where to start, and then. I just started to do it and I did struggle I had to look back at my car coding from time to time and I had to look at one or two of the car tutorials but I got there in the end. When I completed the whole challenge I was actually proud of myself it took me a while but it’s my first piece of game development I’ve d...

Game Elements

Image
Image - Virtual Ping Pong What are the qualities of Games? By Ian Schreiber   In this article the writer talks about all the qualities of a game. There are some recurring themes in games: “rules, conflict, goals, decision-making and an uncertain outcome”.    Ian also explains what the atomic elements in games are, the list as follows are some parts of games: Players Objectives Rules Resources and Resource Management Game State Information Sequencing Player Interaction Theme (Narrative, Backstory, Setting) Game as Systems Ian also leaves a link for each one of these which they are explained a lot more in detail. Critical analysis may not exactly be what you thinking as it is not as simple as just rating the game or just saying it’s fun there’s a lot more to it and it’s a lot more complicated than that.  Find out more! Game design research    This article goes into detail on how all game designers have different perspectives on what exactly game design is. It...
